Aside from repairing and painting the doors, I also added door sweeps, and customized kick plates with my husbands and my first initials. I bought regular old brass kick plates, annealed them, and found a cool font to use for the letters. After cutting them out with my trust jeweler's saw, and rounding the ends, they were ready to install. I think they look great, and they protect the doors.
Here's a fun fact. I replaced the molding on the front of the doors used to hide the gap between them. The old molding was a handmade single piece original to the doors. I could not find molding just like it. What I did find were threshold covers that were the right width, and half round molding to go up the center. it looks exactly like the original. We now know why there was a notch taken out of the molding around where the doorknob is. My husband and I have smashed our fingers in it several times, but there will be no notching of this one!!! Speaking of the doorknob, it has been replaced as well with an appropriate vintage working Eastlake which I duked it out for on Ebay. it was worth it!!!
