Air, Water, Fire, Earth, Spirit
2009
Acrylic on Watercolor paper
8"X10"
I have been struggling with this piece for months. It started with images of Moroccan doorways and windows, and than Goth stained glass. I wanted to make four pieces that worked together as a series. The theme of universal connections kept entering my mind, and I struggled to find a visual for this. Finally I looked up the symbols for Air, Water, Fire, and Earth. I found there is a fifth element I had not thought of, spirit. The spirit is symbolized by a human form or a skull. With that in mind this became a kind of self portrait with my head in each of the four images both full at small scale and in section to created one image when the pieces are put together. I also used the Alchemist symbols for the elements as well as objects to represent them. The alchemy symbols are basically equilateral triangles. Air is a triangle pointing up and a line through it. Earth is a triangle pointing down with a line through it. Fire is a triangle pointing up with no line. Water is a triangle pointing down with no line. Each piece is titled with the element's Latin name.
