Aside from newspapers, I came to find that wood shavings were used to insulate the larger spaces between the studs as well as under the floor. The bay window in our livingroom was an addition. After I removed the moldings, you can see where the wall was cut open. There are cut marks in the paint and wood where the saw used to make the opening hit the ceiling. Also, I pulled up the first floor board to find wood shavings stuffed in between the floor joists, and below the shavings more news papers, and below that the old painted wood boards of the porch.
